SMITHS SECTRIC melamine cased wall clock with 12 inch 24 hour dial, early 1970s

In the 1960s Smiths replaced bakelite as a case material with another thermosetting plastic - melamine. The combination of a bright white case and dial with bold black Space Age numerals defined the appearance of Smiths utility wall clocks throughout the 1970s. In this case the dial has subsidiary red 24 hour markers (which are in a much more traditional typeface) for use where operations were based on 24 hour timings. The addition of a smooth-sweeping red centre seconds hand completes the classic look.

The clock runs on mains electricity and is driven by the 'QGEM' synchronous motor, a self-starting movement developed by Smiths and in use from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. It keeps perfect time because it is synchronized to the frequency of the electricity supply.

This example has never been used and is consequently in factory-fresh condition, apart from one small dent to the dial below the 10 (pictured). It is supplied in full working order with instructions on setting up and guidance on aftercare.
