This is a rare, early example of the classic Smiths coach clock, produced for the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB), which was only in existence from 1933 to 1948. It bears the logo of Smiths Motor Accessories, which expanded into domestic production with the launch of 'Smiths Clocks' in 1931. Smiths MA had already been making clocks for cars and motorcycles for many years (often with black dials), so this must be one of the first coach clocks made. Some parts differ substantially from those on later models, so it is likely that this 'prototype' design was adopted and improved by Smiths Clocks for wider application.
The clock would have been fitted at the front of the coach so that it was visible to passengers and driver. The heavy chromed bezel, which holds the entire movement, is hinged from the steel back plate, swinging upwards to allow access for winding and time setting. The movement housing is of diecast alloy and pressed steel. The entire assembly is housed in a mottled brown bakelite case.
The clock is powered by the well proven Smiths 8 day 2 inch movement with platform escapement and will run for over a week on a full wind.
The clock has been sensitively restored and is in excellent overall condition. There is a slight bloom to the black paint on the dial, but it is still very crisp with no loss. The hands have been refinished but the clock is otherwise completely original. It is supplied in full working order with instructions on setting up and regulating plus guidance on aftercare.
