SMITHS bakelite cased 8 day wall clock with 8 inch dial, George VI cypher dated 1946

This is an excellent example of the iconic Smiths clock, dated October 1946 (the regulator dust cover has the hand-engraved date of commission). Given that the rear of the dial bears the cypher of George VI, it would probably have been produced for a special application within government or some other public service body.

The clock is solidly constructed, with a robust 'jelly mould' bakelite case, steel dial and false plate, brass sight ring and knurled brass winder. It is powered by the well proven Smiths 8 day 2 inch movement and will run for over a week on a full wind.

The clock has been disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and serviced and sensitively restored as required. The brown bakelite case is particularly bright and highly figured. It is in excellent condition with a few marks but no damage. The glass is clear and unmarked. There is some slight foxing to the rear of the false plate, but the overall condition is very good.

The painted and screen-printed steel dial has survived very well. It has aged uniformly to a soft tobacco colour with only very slight speckling and marking, not visible from a normal viewing distance. The numerals and inscriptions are very clear with no loss.

The clock is in full working order and currently keeping good time. It is supplied with instructions on setting up and regulating plus guidance on aftercare.
