EBCO patent folding bookcase in black bakelite, 1936

This practical and stylish bookcase was patented in Great Britain in 1936 by Mr William Beveridge Robertson. It comprises a set of substantial bakelite mouldings (in either black or brown) and is designed to fold flat – ideal for travelling. It is stunning to look at with a design typical of the restrained British approach to Art Deco.

The “collapsible portable book rest” found favour with the Educational Book Company (EBCO), a subsidiary of Amalgamated Press, who supplied it for many years with their 10 volume set of Arthur Mee’s Children’s Encyclopaedia. It would be equally at home today with CDs (if anyone still has them) or DVDs.

We have a few of these in stock and each is prepared to order, involving thorough cleaning, any repairs or restoration as necessary and hand-polishing.
