COLUMBUS 13 inch terrestrial globe, circa 1964

The Columbus company was founded in Berlin in 1909 by Paul Oestergaard. After WWII, the company relocated to Stuttgart where it is still producing globes today. Columbus is highly regarded among collectors for the quality, detail, innovative design and variety of its globes.

This is a very fine table globe, printed in English, in outstanding original condition. It can be dated to circa 1964 as Nyasaland is now Malawi and Northern Rhodesia is Zambia, while Malta is not yet independent and Tanganyika is not yet Tanzania (all 1964). It is shown alongside its 4.3 inch sibling (also circa 1964) in the last photograph.

The globe is constructed from a pasteboard sphere with 12 hand applied paper gores and polar calottes. It is mounted on a turned beech wood base and graduated aluminium half-meridian with aluminium pin bearings.

The map has been carefully cleaned and is in excellent condition with bright colours and minimal marking. The meridian has been cleaned and the base cleaned and polished; both are also in excellent condition.
